SOMOS
SOMOS developed a solution focused on helping small coffee farmers operating in Nicaragua’s Miraflor Natural Reserve halt the negative environmental impact of their production process while also taking advantage of the waste byproducts of that process to produce other raw materials which can be exported for additional revenue.

Wege Prize
Wege Prize is a yearly student design competition that gives teams of five the chance to collaborate across institutional and disciplinary boundaries, use design thinking principles, and contend for $30,000 in total cash prizes, all while helping to show the world what the future of problem solving looks like.

WikiD Housing
What started as conceptual design idea quickly merged into a maker competition, and ultimately is being continued as a possible solution to a wicked problem. From concept sketches, to technical drawings, to a rather complex model, this team of four students utilized the design process to try and tackle a huge issue: emergency relief housing.

UNTITLED. Art Fair 2015
In late November of 2015, two of our students were granted the opportunity to travel with Grand Rapids-based non-profit, SiTE:LAB, to the UNTITLED. Art Fair in Miami. While there, these two rockstar students assisted with the installation of artist Julie Schenkelberg’s massive piece, Lemurian Shift.

Rumsey Street Project
SiTE:LAB has a history of doing big things in Grand Rapids – especially during ArtPrize. In 2015, they collaborated with Habitat for Humanity of Kent County, as well as the Kent County Land Bank, to acquire 5 acres of abandoned buildings and spaces. Taking over an entire block on the southwest side of GR, the all volunteer crew helped to transform the area through site specific art installations.

The Grand Rapids Public Museum School is a school for the students of Grand Rapids and the greater Grand Rapids area. This School will implement progressive teaching methods that have been developed utilizing design thinking techniques, focusing on real-life experiences and leveraging the artifact collections & exhibitions of the Grand Rapids Public Museum.
